{ for the cure }.
Every year in the United States 40,000 women and men die of breast cancer. In my own family, generations of women have been afflicted with this terrible disease. Every life is precious and every effort, no matter how small, is equally significant if it can help to save a life.
Two years ago I decided to help raise awareness of this staggering number- 40,000 - by stringing together 40,000 pink beads to represent each life lost due to breast cancer. After stringing them, and measuring the total length (~1048 feet or the length of 3 football fields), I submitted the attempt to the Guinness Book of World Records in October of 2009. In November of 2010, I received a certificate awarding me the record of the “longest string of beads strung by a single person”.
I am now asking people to sponsor buying a bead (or beads) at a dollar per bead. You will then be a partial owner of a Guinness World Record! Each donor will be given an opportunity to dedicate their beads to a loved one, a friend, or someone who is fighting breast cancer. All dedications will be listed on this webpage.
Please buy a bead and spread the word. Explain to them about the number 40,000. It certainly shocked me into doing something. Hopefully, with each contribution the number will get smaller and smaller until the “string of beads” will no longer exist.
Sincerely,
Elisabeth Reiss
